Stefan’s Surrender

The cobblestone path shined slick black, gleaming gold where the dim light of street lamps bounced off the moisture of the drizzling rain. Stefan rushed to the barricade that lined the edge of the path overlooking the river below. The muscled black body of the serpent glided on the surface of the now poisoned water. Despite being around twenty feet long and at least two feet in width, the creature moved with speed and great agility. A small pebble loosened with the weight of Stefan’s foot and he watched in horror as it fell into the river with a small bloop. The serpent whirled its enormous body around, making direct eye contact with Stefan, who saw in its eyes the most horrifying element of it all - intelligence. It began to swim directly for the wall above which he stood. Stefan froze in fright, eyes searching for the nearest hiding place, but to no avail. The serpent began to climb up the wall, and Stefan rushed to take the nearest torch off of the pikes lining the buildings. As it reared up, Stefan yelled for anyone and everyone that might be able to hear him, but just as the sounds of his screaming reached his teeth, the serpent sunk its fangs through his face from his cheek to the back of his neck and pulled him into the obsidian depths below.
